BADVILLAIN Debut, WayV, Kep1er, and AKMU, Han Seungwoo, GHOST9 Comeback Review

Is it the start of summer yet? Well, that depends on where you live in the world. But needless to say, this week started out hot with several comebacks and an interesting debut.

Friendly Reminder:

Our critiques are in no way meant as bashing on the groups or artists. We still support them (that’s why we’re still writing about them). Even if we might not like a particular song, that doesn’t mean you’ll dislike it too. Everyone has different tastes in music, and regardless of what we say, we want YOU to check out all these comebacks. You never know which song might become your new favorite.

So now let’s dive into them.

BADVILLAIN is Our New Hero

This brand-new seven-member girl group from BPM Entertainment is taking the YG formula and upgrading it. They went for a villainous anti-hero concept, and it works. Their song “BADVILLAIN” is the perfect way to introduce the group and their villainous anti-hero concept.

Their company did an excellent job at differentiating them from their label mates Viviz. Although there are some similarities to YG’s new girl group BABYMONSTER, BADVILLAIN’s music production for their title track “BADVILLAIN” feels much more updated. However their b-side “YAH-HO (BADTITUDE)” was sadly a miss in both song and choreography. But luckily they went with “BADVILLAIN” therefore this has been the most memorable debut of 2024 so far.

WayV Got the Wrong Title Track

Easy listening and slightly comedic, WayV’s new song “Give Me That” did not live up to some of its previous title tracks, such as “On My Youth” or “Phantom.” The concept was on the lighter side, with the members showing off their easygoing charms and smooth choreography.

This song seems more suited for their label mates RIIZE, and WayV definitely should have gone with their b-side “She A Wolf” for their title track.

Sadly, Winwin is absent for this comeback due to schedule conflicts. He is currently filming in China and was unable to participate in this comeback.

Overall, “Give Me That” was not as memorable as WayV’s previous title tracks, but we recommend checking out their b-sides.

Kep1er Shines in “Shooting Star”

Where was this concept the whole time? Kep1er had a strong debut with “Wa Da Da” but fizzled out due to unmemorable title tracks that didn’t seem to live up to their debut song. Kep1er was formed on the survival competition show Girls Planet 999 and grew a large following, but the company hasn’t seemed to manage them well enough.

It’s sad it took the company this long to give them a concept fitting of their name and original concept. Too bad this is their last comeback with all nine original members. Their title track “Shooting Star” is a beautiful song that showcases their vocal abilities and strong performance as a group.

We can’t go back and change the past, so for now, let’s appreciate this wonderful comeback from Kep1er.

AKMU Brings Fantasy and Fun in “Hero”

Quirky and fantastical, the brother-sister duo AKMU knows how to stand out from the rest. Their song “Hero” is a smooth and somewhat jazzy song with wonderful lyrics. It’s perfect for coffee shops or just to unwind at the end of the day.

Han Seungwoo Steals Hearts in “Scene”

Sincere and serene, Seungwoo’s single album “Scene” is filled with his beautiful, fluid vocals and a sprinkle of nostalgic melodies. Seungwoo’s comforting lyrics and performance showcase his ability to bring healing and hope through his music.

GHOST9 Has a Great Time in “Awesome Day”

An easy-listening song, perfect if the sun is shining and you want to have an awesome day. No doubt this will be a fan favorite at concerts. It’s light and smooth; however, we do hope to see GHOST9 release powerful songs like they have in the past.
